About KOFIHThe Korea Foundation for International Health (KOFIH) and the Ghana National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) conducted joint research to strengthen the management of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and held a result-sharing workshop in July 2025 to share the results with the public and promote discussion on health insurance policies.
The workshop was organized to review the current status of chronic disease management and discuss practical policy proposals and field application plans based on the research results. Participants included the Ghana Ministry of Health (MoH), the Ghana National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the World Health Organization (WHO), civil society, and health experts.
The Ghana National Health Insurance Authority emphasized that chronic diseases place a significant burden on health insurance finances and that effective disease prevention and early diagnosis are key strategies for ensuring both national fiscal stability and public health. In addition, an official from the NHIA stated, “Beyond a simple treatment approach, data-based strategic purchasing and a sustainable financing system are urgently needed,” adding, “This joint study has been a great help in laying the foundation for policy, and we look forward to realizing more comprehensive health coverage through continued cooperation with KOFIH.”
KOFIH aims to support the systematization of chronic disease management, one of the core challenges in achieving universal health coverage (UHC), through this discussion. Going forward, KOFIH plans to contribute to improving the health of Ghanaian citizens and strengthening the health insurance system through continued collaboration with NHIA.
