KOFIH held an Online Integrated Opening Ceremony of the 2021 Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program

With 100 healthcare fellows from 9 Asian and African countries, the ceremony could reaffirm the solidarity with partner countries. The Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (President Kim Chang-yup, “KOFIH”) informed that it conducted the online integrated opening ceremony of the 2021 Dr LE Jong-wook Fellowship Program for 100 healthcare trainees from 9 Asian and African countries (Cambodia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Laos, Mongolia, Tanzania, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam). The opening ceremony was held at the Orchid banquet hall at the Westin Josun Hotel in Seoul on the 23rd. The ceremony was attended by the fellows participating in Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program, Director General Yoon Chan Sik for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and relevant staff in charge of each training course working to enhance capacity of the fellows. Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program, which started since 2007, is a mid-to-long-term invitational training program to uphold the will of Dr Lee Jong-wook, the 6th WHO director-general to ‘nurture global healthcare professionals’. As of today, the program has trained 1,070 fellows from a total of 30 countries. In addition, KOFIH established ''KOFIH Global Alumni (KGA)'' in 12 partner countries, including Laos and Cambodia to enhance the effectiveness and continuity of the invitational training program and keep supporting local activities initiated by the fellows. On the same day, an orientation lecture was provided for the trainees, and the Director Lee Dong-Han from Infectious Disease Control Division of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency introduced Korea''s infection prevention policies against COVID-19 infection under the topic of ''Korea’s Infectious Disease Control Policy''. In addition, Professor Yoo Seok-hoon from Korea University delivered a lecture on the topic of ''Korean history and culture education'' to develop the trainees'' ability to adapt to Korea and had a meaningful time to learn Korean culture. President Kim Chang-yup of KOFIH said in his welcoming speech, “For the next few years, hospitals and medical institutions in all countries will have no choice but to focus on building a system that can respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and essential medical services. Developing health and medical professionals suitable for the ''post-COVID regime'' has become an essential task for all countries”. He added and emphasized, “I hope the trainees will contribute to the development of health care in their own country, and participate in collaborative efforts to overcome global health crisis and to co-exist with mankind, building on their capacity strengthened through Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program.”
