□ The Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) hosts course for Infectious Disease Specialists annually as part of the prestigious Dr Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program. This course aims to equip emerging leaders with advanced skills in infectious disease management and epidemiology. Among this year’s fellows, Ugandan epidemiologists Hildah Tendo Nansikombi and Sarah Elayeete were honored with invitations to present at the Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health Conference 2024 (APACPH 2024), highlighting their notable contributions to public health.
△ Ms. Hildah Tendo Nansikombi, Uganda National Institute of Public Health
□ Hildah Tendo Nansikombi, a senior epidemiologist and field trainer with Uganda’s Ministry of Health, shared that the Dr. Lee Jong-Wook Fellowship Program has sharpened her skills in data analysis, particularly using R software, enabling her to respond more effectively to health crises in Uganda. The program also expanded her understanding of Global Health Security, equipping her with insights into the policies and international collaborations essential for managing infectious disease threats. This training has enhanced her capacity to strengthen Uganda’s public health resilience and contribute to global health security efforts.
△ Ms. Sarah Elayeete, Uganda National Institute of Public Health
□ Sarah Elayeete, also a field epidemiology trainer, presented her impactful project on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for high-risk women in Uganda, a study that earned her the ‘Outstanding Oral Presentation’ award at APACPH 2024. Her work identified critical gaps in PrEP uptake and proposed quality improvement strategies to enhance HIV prevention efforts.
□ Recognized for their leadership and dedication, Hildah Tendo Nansikombi and Sarah Elayeete represent the future of public health in Uganda, prepared to apply global insights to local health challenges. Through KOFIH’s Dr Lee Jong-wook program, both epidemiologists are now poised to drive positive changes in Uganda’s health landscape and contribute to international health security.
